SINALOA CELEBRATES: LUIS GASTÉLUM IS THE NEW MEXICAN IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES

Mexican baseball writes a new chapter in its history. Right-handed pitcher Luis Enrique Gastélum, originally from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, received the call from the St. Louis Cardinals and became the new Mexican to debut in the Major Leagues, in addition to being the 25th Sinaloan to reach the highest level. His ascent is no accident: it comes after a solid season in Triple-A, where he recorded 49 strikeouts in just over 40 innings of work, a figure that reflects his dominance and effectiveness from the bullpen.

At 24 years old, Gastélum built his opportunity through results. During the 2026 season, he achieved a streak of almost two months without allowing a run, exhibiting precise control, the ability to get outs in critical moments, and notable maturity on the mound. His performance placed him as one of the most reliable assets for the Memphis Redbirds, the Cardinals' affiliate, who did not hesitate to promote him as reinforcement for their relief corps.

The native of Los Mochis began his journey in the St. Louis organization in 2023 and, step by step, surpassed each level of the minor league system. His growth also led him to be considered on the radar of the Mexican national team for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, consolidating him as one of the country's most promising arms.

With this call-up, Gastélum not only fulfills a personal dream but also joins a century-old history: since 1933, 154 players born in Mexico have played in the Major Leagues, making his debut the 155th Mexican to reach the best baseball in the world. Today, Sinaloa once again raises its hand on the international diamond, as a new story begins to be written from the mound.
