RAYS BEAT CLEVELAND 3-1, ONE WIN AWAY FROM WORLD SERIES; MEXICAN JONATHAN ARANDA CONTRIBUTES WITH BAT
The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Sunday, October 18, 2026, during the fifth game of the American League Championship Series, played at Progressive Field. With this result, the Florida nine took a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series, and are one win away from advancing to the World Series. The visiting offense opened the scoring in the first inning when Yandy Díaz hit a double and Jonny DeLuca drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing the first run. In the second inning, Tijuana native Jonathan Aranda hit a run-scoring single to make it 2-0, while Liam Hicks drove in the third run in the third inning with a hit that brought Chandler Simpson home.
The Mexican Jonathan Aranda once again contributed to Tampa Bay's offense, finishing the game with two hits and one RBI, after connecting against Cleveland starter Parker Messick. The Guardians' pitcher had a short outing, leaving the game after two innings of work, in which he threw 57 pitches. Cleveland managed to get closer in the sixth inning when a ground ball from Chase DeLauter allowed Steven Kwan to score their team's only run; however, the Rays' pitching prevented the home team from completing the comeback. Starter Drew Rasmussen was decisive, working seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, while recording six strikeouts. For their part, Tampa Bay's bullpen maintained the lead, and Bryan Baker closed out the ninth inning to secure the win by a two-run margin.
The series will continue this Monday, October 19, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, where Tampa Bay will have the opportunity to secure the American League Championship in front of their home crowd. Game six is scheduled for 6:00 PM Central Mexico Time. The Rays need one win to earn their spot in the Fall Classic, while Cleveland is obligated to win the remaining two games to stay in the competition. Should the Guardians tie the series 3-3, the seventh and deciding game will be played on Tuesday, October 20. The winner of the series will face the Milwaukee Brewers, the National League representatives, who secured their place in the World Series after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0.
