WHY DID FIFA PUNISH THE ARGENTINE NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM?
FIFA imposed a series of sanctions on members of the Argentine national team following incidents that occurred at the end of the 2026 World Cup final, played against Spain. The most severe punishment was for Leandro Paredes, who received a 10-match suspension and a $90,000 fine for his participation in the brawl after the match. Nahuel Molina was also sanctioned with seven matches and $90,000, while Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension and a $30,000 fine. Additionally, Roberto Ayala, a member of the Argentine coaching staff, will have to serve a three-match ban. On the Spanish side, Gavi was suspended for one match and fined $30,000.
The measures primarily respond to the confrontation that occurred after Argentina's defeat against Spain, when several players were involved in a physical altercation on the field. FIFA considered that some of the actions constituted aggression and unsportsmanlike conduct, leading them to open individual disciplinary proceedings against the players involved. Paredes was deemed responsible for three acts of aggression, while Molina faced two charges. The sanctions aim to establish consequences for behaviors that, according to the world football governing body, affect the discipline and image of an international competition.
The AFA also received an economic sanction of approximately $321,000 for various infractions during the World Cup. These include the display of a banner with a message related to Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after the semi-final against England, as well as discriminatory conduct by fans, security issues, and other disciplinary offenses. As part of the punishment, Argentina will have to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity limited to 50%, while a portion of the economic sanction is linked to anti-discrimination measures. The AFA has the option to appeal the decision to FIFA and, subsequently, to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
