Nine Players Make History in the New Women's International Baseball League

The new era of professional women's baseball now has a Mexican stamp. Nine national players were selected to be part of the Women's Pro Baseball League (WPBL), an international circuit that in its inaugural season brings together talent from at least 10 countries and is shaping up to be one of the most important showcases for the sport globally.

The selection process took place after a demanding draft held at Nationals Park in Washington D.C., home of the Washington Nationals, where over 600 hopefuls vied for a spot on the league's four founding teams. The Mexican players passed physical and technical evaluations before being chosen by different franchises.

Among those selected are notable names such as Rocío Barajas, Samaria Benítez, Edith De Leija, Rosi del Castillo, María José Valenzuela, Luisa Hernández, Diana Ibarra, Esthela Segovia, and Flor Valerio, who will now represent Mexico in this high-level competition.

The teams that make up the WPBL, with home cities like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Boston, distributed the Mexican talent across different positions, from pitcher and catcher to infielders, reflecting the versatility of Mexican women's baseball.

With this historic step, Mexican women's baseball is consolidating its presence on the international stage, opening a new chapter of professionalization and visibility for athletes seeking to make their mark on the global diamond.
