The achievement holds special significance because Cruz Azul was also the opponent against whom Messi scored his first goal for Inter Miami. That goal occurred on July 21, 2023, during the Leagues Cup, when the then-newly arrived Argentine converted a free-kick in stoppage time to give the Florida team a 2-1 victory. Three years later, he scored against La Máquina again, reaching 100 goals in 115 appearances for the club.

Messi's 100 goals for Inter Miami are distributed as follows: 11 in 2023, 23 in 2024, 43 in 2025, and 23 in 2026.
