Marco Verde and Brandon Mejía, The Faces of Generation Z Aiming to Conquer Mexican Sports
The so-called Generation Z is beginning to take center stage in Mexican sports, and boxing has two of its main representatives in Marco Verde and Brandon “El Perro” Mejía. Both were born after the year 2000 and are part of a crop of young athletes seeking to establish themselves in high-performance sports. Their athletic growth and social media impact have allowed them to connect with new audiences, becoming role models for a generation that follows athletes more than the sports themselves.
Marco Verde, originally from Mazatlán, Sinaloa, is one of the most prominent names in current Mexican boxing. The Sinaloan won the silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, in addition to winning gold at the Pan American Games and the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2023. After making the leap to professionalism in 2025, he maintained a perfect streak in his first fights, backed by a solid amateur career that made him one of the country's biggest prospects.
For his part, Brandon Mejía, born in the State of Mexico, has built an ascending professional career thanks to his knockout power and discipline. The boxer from the State of Mexico arrived undefeated on the international stage and managed to win the WBC Boxing Grand Prix in the featherweight category, a tournament that brought together young talents from different parts of the world. With a perfect professional record and a background as a national youth team member, “El Perro” has established himself as one of the most interesting prospects in Mexican boxing.
In addition to Verde and Mejía in boxing, Mexican Generation Z boasts figures already excelling in other sports disciplines. Among them are Isaac del Toro in cycling, Osmar Olvera in diving, Alejandra Valencia in archery, and other young athletes who have achieved international results in their respective specialties. The emergence of these talents reflects the generational shift in national sports and confirms that Mexico has a new crop of athletes capable of competing at the highest level for years to come.
