The pitcher from Mazatlán, José Luis Urquidy, will continue his journey in Major League Baseball after the Philadelphia Phillies claimed him off waivers from the Chicago White Sox. The move was finalized on September 17, just one day after Chicago designated him for assignment. This means the right-hander from Sinaloa will join his third organization in the 2026 season, having also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. To make room on the 40-man roster, Philadelphia placed right-hander Caleb Kilian on the 60-day injured list.

During the current campaign, Urquidy has made 11 appearances between Pittsburgh and Chicago, with a record of 2-2, an ERA of 5.28, and 21 strikeouts in 29 innings pitched, along with a WHIP of 1.52. The Sinaloan arrives in Philadelphia after posting a 2.70 ERA in his last three outings, all in relief, during which he allowed three earned runs over 10 innings. In his MLB career, he has accumulated 92 games, 71 as a starter, with a record of 29-18 and a 4.08 ERA.

Urquidy's arrival also represents a new possibility to compete in the postseason, as the Phillies are in contention for the top spot in the National League West. The Mazatlán native is already familiar with October baseball and has a specific history against Philadelphia: during the 2022 World Series, he pitched three scoreless innings in Game 3 at Citizens Bank Park, although the Astros ultimately lost 7-0. MLB's regular season will conclude on September 27, so Urquidy will have a few days to try and secure a spot in the Phillies' pitching staff.
