Editorial: Josué Osuna
The Mexican boxing scene has a new reason to celebrate. Sergio “Yoreme” Mendoza from Sonora made history by defeating American Ricardo “El Niño” Sandoval via technical knockout to win the World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Association (WBA) world flyweight championships.
The fight took place on Saturday, October 10th, at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, where the Hermosillo native surprised by winning in the fifth round. Mendoza knocked Sandoval down three times during the bout, until the referee decided to stop the action.
The victory represents one of the most significant achievements in the Mexican boxer's professional career. He accepted the opportunity to fight for the belts after the originally announced opponent, Óscar Collazo, withdrew from the fight due to an injury. With this result, Mendoza became the first male boxer born in Hermosillo to win an undisputed world championship.
At the end of the match, “Yoreme” couldn't contain his emotion and dedicated his triumph to the memory of his brother, who passed away two months prior.
