CHIVAS AND ATLAS, A HISTORIC RIVALRY FROM JALISCO AND MEXICO
Chivas and Atlas drew 1-1 at the Estadio Jalisco, in a match corresponding to matchday 11 of the Apertura 2026 of Liga MX. The Rojinegros took the lead in the 51st minute with a goal from Argentine Kevin Zenón, who finished past goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel. However, Guadalajara rescued the equalizer in the 85th minute thanks to Ángel Sepúlveda, who bounced back after missing a penalty in the 75th minute, saved by Colombian Camilo Vargas. The Atlas goalkeeper was one of the standout players of the match for his saves against the Rojiblancos' attempts, while Rangel also proved decisive by preventing another goal in added time. The match ended with the expulsion of Kevin Castañeda, from Chivas.
The result added another draw to one of the oldest rivalries in Mexican football. According to the historical record published before the match, the Clásico Tapatío had accumulated 298 matches in all competitions, with Chivas leading 115 wins to Atlas's 95 and 88 draws; these figures include official and friendly matches. In Liga MX regular season encounters, Guadalajara also maintained the lead, with 63 wins, 52 draws, and 47 losses in 161 matches. The rivalry, which pits two historic Guadalajara clubs against each other, has roots dating back to the amateur era and represents one of Jalisco's most traditional sporting disputes.
With the points shared, Chivas reached 19 units and Atlas 18 in the Apertura 2026, with both remaining in contention for the top spots in the tournament. The match also featured standout performances: Kevin Zenón scored the Rojinegro goal; Camilo Vargas held the lead by saving the penalty, and Ángel Sepúlveda went from missing from eleven yards to becoming the scorer of the equalizer. For Guadalajara, managed by Gabriel Milito, the result meant rescuing a point as visitors; for Atlas, it represented letting victory slip away in the final minutes. Once again, the Clásico Tapatío confirmed its ability to offer a close contest, marked by intensity, goalkeeping interventions, and the historic rivalry between the two teams.
