Canelo Álvarez Recovers WBC Super Middleweight Title in Riyadh
Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez was once again crowned world champion by defeating Christian Mbilli by unanimous decision at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Mexican completed all 12 rounds and received scorecards of 115-112, 116-111, and 117-110, thereby regaining the World Boxing Council (WBC) super middleweight championship for the 168-pound division.
The victory marked Álvarez's return to championship status after 13 months of inactivity, following his defeat to Terence Crawford in September 2025 and elbow surgery. During the fight, the Guadalajara native primarily used counterpunches, body shots, and his jab to contain the pressure from Mbilli, who lost his undefeated record in his professional career. Additionally, in the eighth round, the Frenchman had a point deducted for an illegal blow to the back of the head.
With this result, Canelo improved his professional record to 64 wins, three losses, and two draws, with 39 victories by knockout, while Mbilli is now at 29 wins, one loss, and one draw. The Mexican closed out the twelfth round with a right hand that staggered the former champion, confirming a victory that allowed him to reclaim one of the belts he had lost after his encounter with Crawford.
