Argentina and Spain to Contest First All-Hispanic World Cup Final Since 1930
By Juan Samuel Santana Chávez
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature a final with historic significance. Argentina and Spain will face each other on July 19th at the New York New Jersey Stadium, in a clash that will mark the second time two Spanish-speaking nations compete for the world title. The only previous instance occurred in the inaugural 1930 edition, when Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in Montevideo. Thus, 96 years have passed to witness a match of this nature again.
The Argentine national team secured their spot in the final after coming from behind to beat England 2-1 in the semifinals. Anthony Gordon put the English side ahead, but Enzo Fernández equalized late in the game, and Lautaro Martínez, with a header assisted by Lionel Messi, sealed the Albiceleste's qualification. For their part, Spain secured their place in the championship match after defeating France 2-0 thanks to goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro, thus returning to a World Cup final for the first time since South Africa 2010.
The match will also pit two teams with very different World Cup final histories against each other. Argentina will play in their seventh final, seeking their fourth World Cup title and a consecutive championship, a feat no team has achieved since Brazil in 1962. Spain, on the other hand, will play in only their second final, aiming to win their second world title. Furthermore, it will be only the second encounter between these two nations in a World Cup, after Argentina won 2-1 in the group stage of the 1966 England World Cup.
