Curacao's goalkeeper, Eloy Room, delivered a historic performance this Saturday, registering 15 saves in the goalless draw against Ecuador in a Group E match of the 2026 World Cup. The veteran 37-year-old keeper became the standout player of the match played in Kansas City, repeatedly thwarting the South American team's attempts.

Room's outstanding performance allowed Curacao to earn their first-ever point in a World Cup, in only their second tournament appearance. The Caribbean nation, which debuted with a 7-1 defeat against Germany, withstood Ecuador's siege thanks to the reliability of their goalkeeper, who responded to shots from stars like Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata, and John Yeboah.

But who is Eloy Room? Born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, in 1989, Eloy Room decided to represent Curacao due to his family roots. Developed in Dutch football with clubs like Vitesse and PSV Eindhoven, the goalkeeper gained prominence in MLS by winning the 2020 MLS Cup with Columbus Crew. Since his debut with Curacao in 2015, he became a key player for the country's historic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Room's 15 interventions represent the most saves in a World Cup match played solely in regulation time since detailed official records began in 1966. The goalkeeper was just one save shy of equaling the absolute record of 16 saves set by American Tim Howard in the match between the United States and Belgium during the round of 16 of Brazil 2014, a figure reached in 120 minutes after extra time was played.

With this result, Curacao keeps its aspirations of advancing to the next round alive and continues to write memorable pages in its first World Cup appearance. Eloy Room, currently a player for Miami FC and former Columbus Crew goalkeeper, went from being one of the tournament's surprises to becoming a national hero for the Caribbean island, which celebrated a draw that felt like a victory.
