MEXICO CLOSES PARTICIPATION IN THE 2026 WORLD CUP AND ADDS ANOTHER ELIMINATION IN THE ROUND OF 16

By Juan Samuel Santana Chávez

The Mexican National Team concluded its participation in the 2026 World Cup after falling 3-2 to England in the round of 16, a result that marked their elimination from the tournament and ended their journey as one of the three host nations. With this outcome, the national team was eliminated before the quarterfinals and once again said goodbye in the round of 16.

The Mexican representative now has 19 World Cup participations and its best performances were the quarterfinals reached in Mexico 1970 and Mexico 1986, both editions played at home. Since USA 1994, Mexico has been eliminated eight times in the round of 16 (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2026), while in Qatar 2022 they were eliminated in the group stage, breaking the streak of seven consecutive qualifications to the round of 16.

Mexico's historical record in the World Cup is 19 participations, two quarterfinal appearances, eight eliminations in the round of 16, and one elimination in the group stage in their last ten World Cup appearances. The 2026 edition represents the most recent occasion in which the national team was among the top 16 teams in the tournament, although again without achieving passage to the quarterfinals.
