Tomateros Stadium Renamed to Honor Juan Ley Fong After 11 Years
Culiacán, Sinaloa. — The home of the Tomateros de Culiacán will officially be named Estadio Juan Ley Fong, in recognition of one of the figures who contributed to the development of baseball in Sinaloa and the consolidation of the "guinda" organization. The announcement was made on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, during a press conference prior to the start of the 2026-2027 Mexican Pacific League (LMP) season. With this decision, the venue leaves behind the name Estadio Tomateros, used since its inauguration in October 2015, so the change comes after approximately 11 years.
The name modification represents a tribute to Juan Ley Fong, a businessman of Chinese origin, a promoter of baseball in Sinaloa, and the patriarch of the Ley family, whose support was important for the franchise's growth. His sporting legacy continued through his son, Juan Manuel Ley López, who contributed to consolidating the Tomateros as one of the standout clubs in Mexican winter baseball. The new designation also revives an idea of recognition for the founder that had been considered before the opening of the current ballpark. Thus, the change seeks to keep his contribution to the team's history present and pass it on to new generations of fans.
The current stadium was delivered in January 2015 and inaugurated on October 9 of the same year, after the demolition of the old Estadio General Ángel Flores in 2014, a venue that had been part of Culiacán's baseball history for 66 years. According to information from the Culiacán City Council, the modern venue has a capacity for approximately 20,000 fans, in addition to 38 suites and 41 food and beverage establishments. Estadio Juan Ley Fong will debut its new identity on the eve of the start of the 2026-2027 campaign: the inaugural ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, October 15, with gates opening at 5:00 PM and the inaugural ceremony scheduled for 7:00 PM, before the scheduled first pitch at 8:05 PM.
